My Newcastle Building Society Passbook Commission

My Newcastle Building Society Passbook Commission

Posted by Joanne Wishart on

I’m thrilled to finally share a special commission I’ve been working on behind the scenes for Newcastle Building Society! In December, I was given the incredible opportunity to design an artwork cover for their Savings Passbook, alongside the talented designer Lisa Kirkbride (also a Cullercoats based artist) and North East abstract artist Barrie Watson. I’m not going to lie, it was so hard to keep this project a secret!

On a personal level, this project was especially meaningful to me. I've had a savings account with Newcastle Building Society since childhood, and it has been a constant throughout many milestones in my life—saving for art school, funding the start of my business, and eventually putting aside money for a house deposit. Being invited to create artwork for the Pass Book covers, breathing new life into them for a new era, felt like a full-circle moment.

The Vision Behind the Artwork - Celebrating the North East Community

When I started working on this piece, I wanted to create something that resonated with the people of the North East while embodying the values of inclusivity, community, and mindful money management. Newcastle Building Society’s commitment to these values inspired me to craft a piece that is not only visually appealing but also deeply symbolic.

Symbolism in the Painting – A Tribute to the North East

Every element of the painting tells a story, representing different aspects of financial security and personal growth:

🏡 The Lighthouse – At the heart of the artwork stands a lighthouse, a symbol of guidance, stability, and reassurance. Just as a lighthouse provides direction in uncertain waters, savings offer a sense of security and peace of mind for the future.

🌄 Rolling Hills & Open Countryside – These elements reflect the journey of building savings. Just like nature’s landscapes evolve over time, saving is a gradual process that grows and strengthens, leading toward financial stability with the path representing the savings journey towards a beacon of light at the end.

🌸 Spring Bluebells – These delicate flowers in the foreground represent fresh beginnings and new opportunities. They symbolize growth that careful financial planning can bring and blooms of joy that comes from reaching savings milestones.

By incorporating these elements, my goal was to create a piece that not only celebrates the beauty of the North East but also encourages people to embrace the power of saving for their future.

A Keepsake for the Future for North East Savers

This Savings Passbook isn’t just a financial tool—it’s a cherished keepsake, marking important moments and milestones in life. Whether saving for a first home, a dream holiday, a piece of art or a rainy day, I hope this passbook serves as a reminder of the journey and the achievements along the way.

Exhibiting at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art

I’m excited to share that all three commissioned artworks will be on display at the Baltic from 26th February - 2nd March

Meet the Artist: I’ll be there on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM – pop by, say hello, and find out how you can get your hands on one of these special passbooks!

Final Thoughts

Working on this commission has been an absolute privilege. It’s nice to break out of my comfort zone of gallery life and work with a larger organisaton. Art has a unique way of telling stories, and I’m incredibly proud that my piece can contribute to something as meaningful as encouraging financial well-being and community connection.

I’d love to hear what you think! Leave a comment, share your thoughts, or come see the artwork in person at the Baltic. If you do pick up a passbook, I hope it brings you inspiration and motivation on your savings journey. Let me know what you are saving for?
